UPGRADES #3 CLICK HERE
And
finally #9 in the list of great engine upgrades
that illustrate what's possible and cool for upgrading
and engine as part of your classic car restoration
project.
This
example is a '55 Chevy. The customer performed his
own frame-off restoration over the course of several
years, and has gotten good use of it since then.
The car is gorgeous, and fun to drive. But like
a lot of people, he's looking for a lot more from
his engine. The car currently has the original 283
CID engine in it, and we'll certainly be returning
that engine to the customer to help keep all the
original parts together in case someone wants to
bring the car back to original some day.
But
for now he's providing us with a 383 CID that a
friend of his built for him. Our customer and his
engine building buddy used to drag race competitively
together in the 70s, and are very excited to be
getting back together for this project. And what
fun the engine builder is having with all the great
quality high performance parts available today,
in contrast to the tough work guys had to do 30
years ago to get less power! Lower cost, better
power, less work, more dependability. Engine technology
has come a very long way.
This
engine is being shipped directly to our shop, and
we are providing design and installation service.
We'll re-seal his Muncie transmission, replace the
clutch, upgrade the exhaust for the increased horsepower
engine, recommend and install a cooling package,
and do a really clean job installing his real fast
engine. He's figuring he'll be in the 420 HP range,
plenty enough for a nice classic Chevy like this.
On other pages of this article you'll find the remaining
topics covered for mechanical upgrades to your classic
car restoration project. Muscle car restorations
have different possibilities than antique restorations,
and all the relevant topics are covered here. Read
